Bickslow steadied his hands as he and his horse neared the icy ocean. The magnificent bay stallion shrieked out towards the calm water, but its rider didn’t give in. It reared, pawed and struck the air with its black hooves. The salt water called to the horse, its hum ringing through the stallion’s blood, and it fought against the firm hands holding it back.
Bickslow hated this time of year. The winter winds stirred his normally quiet horses awake, allowing them all to become the monsters that the local islanders knew them as They were called Capaill Uisce.
He had thought that taking one of them out to view the sea to let off excess energy would help, but he was far from right. He should have known better than to test the magic of the island. He lightly turned the steed around and gave only half an inch of rein.
